« BackForty-Seven Senators Vote in Objection to EPA Proceeding with Greenhouse Gas Rule
Tuesday, June 15, 2010
On June 10, the U.S. Senate voted on a “resolution of disapproval” (Senate Joint Resolution 26) that sought to preempt the EPA from regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act. While as expected the resolution fell short of the 51 votes needed to pass, 47 Senators including several key Democrats voted in favor of blocking the EPA from moving forward, and instead allowing Congress the opportunity to fully debate climate change.
Sponsored by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AL), S.J. Res. 26 would have nullified the EPA’s December 15, 2009 “endangerment finding,” which states that greenhouse gases are a danger to public health and should be regulated as pollutants under the Clean Air Act. The EPA regulation will create mandates on small businesses such as federal permitting requirements, restrictions on fuel choices and energy use, and requirements for installation of new energy-efficient equipment.
One Voice supported S.J. Res. 26 as it believes that climate change, emissions and energy consumption policy deserve additional rigorous debate in Congress before the EPA acts. One Voice views climate change not just as an environmental issue, but one of global trade and international competitiveness.
